My Life now in RSS Format
Thanks to the goodness that is Yahoo Pipes!, I was able to create a feed of my life except for a major exception, facebook. If I had facebook as part of this I believe that the RSS feed would basically encompass everything. I could theoretically write a scraper, but I didn’t want to go to the trouble just yet.
So what is the feed actually showing? It is showing when I did a specific thing at a specific time. So as you go through it you can get a glimpse of what happened at really any given point in my life. This master feed is quite simple to create in Yahoo Pipes. All you do is Fetch Feeds for all you feeds, sort it by pubDate in descending order and output it.
What does this mean? It means Web 2.0 makes a LOT of information available to the public. Although, I doubt that anyone would care about my virtual life it really introduces privacy issues. Maybe I will start using those privacy features a bit more…
[I did not link to the feed because I am quite freaked out, by it having so much info. You guys can do it yourselves.]
Move to wordpress.com
Hey all. I just moved my blog from slicehost to wordpress.com. I did this because I am extremely worried about my sysadmin capabilities (I don’t backup stuff
) so I decided to move to the wonderful wordpress.com. I will still use and totally recommend Slicehost! If you don’t have it well wait in line to get one. It’s just that awesome. Hopefully, by moving to wordpress I can worry less about the safety of my blog posts (not that the content is anything to worry about in the first place).
So what will be new? Well I sort of don’t want to spend money so I am doing a cheap 301 redirect to abhiyerra.wordpress.com. It gets the job done. All links should work like before. Hopefully this will get me more readers? Who knows, but enjoy!
Tumblr
I am posting more and more to my tumblelog then this site so I thought I’d come out with why this is. Tumblr, which powers my tumblelog, lets me just make random posts of links, quotes, videos, photos and of course text. All this is done in a stream of thought fashion whereas blogs are more organized thoughts.
Think of it like this. A tumblelog is like a place to muse and work out thoughts. They’re much more personal then blogs because there is no commenting, there is no conversation which is actually what a blog is. A blog is a conversation with the world where as a tumblelog is a place to let out ideas and reflections of ideas and beliefs. A place to post things that interest you. A place where it doesn’t really matter if you write total crap because it’s not really meant to be taken seriously.
So that is why I am posting much more on my tumblr. Plus it’s just so damn easy to write when you are writing for yourself then it is to write to an audience.
New Host
I have moved from Dreamhost to Slicehost VPS which is going pretty well. I am running a Debian instance with full root which can be considered a good or bad thing depending on the perspective of if you know me or not. Anyways, it gives me a lot more control over what I can and can’t do on the server since it is basically like having your own server.
I only have had it for a day, but I must say I like it a lot. It is costing me $20 bucks a month and I have to say it is worth it especially since I do a lot of webdev stuff it is good to have a decent server with privileges to change things as I please. Hope to see a lot more projects soon and if you are visiting this site there should be a significent speedup which is nice since Dreamhost was just slow as hell.
If you are signing up if you can use this referral that’d be awesome.
One Year
It has been one year since I started this blog and I must say a lot has happened in that one year. Though, I have had a blog in one form or another since before then this one has been my favorite since I have written so much code and have actually made some contributions to people decisions through the MacBook. Hope to continue for another year! Some new things coming to the webpage soon.
Spam….
I’ve been getting so much spam on this blog it’s amazingly annoying. Although, I have Akismet turned on there is still a lot that still gets through. I have been reading that Akismet has been giving false positives and I don’t know if anyone has been trying to contact me, but please email me if you are.
